Karate, or karatedō (空手道), is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is present-day Okinawa, Japan. It evolved from indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts and was influenced by Chinese martial arts. 
The word “Karate” means “empty hand,” derived from the Japanese characters “Kara” (empty) and “Te” (hand). The suffix “-dō” signifies “the way,” indicating that karate is a comprehensive way of life. 
Karate primarily involves striking techniques like punches and kicks, but traditional training may also include throwing and joint locks. A karate practitioner is known as a karateka.

Karate is a Japanese martial art whose physical aspects seek the development of defensive and counterattacking body movements. The themes of traditional karate training are fighting and self-defense, though its mental and moral aspects target the overall improvement of the individual.

Karate is a highly effective system of self – defence, and also an excellent form of exercise that promotes a number of life skills and values.
